I had this awesome idea with another kindergarten resident, Ms. Robertson, to make vegetable gardens. How cool for our students to learn not only how plants grow, but also how to care for them and even get to eat them!
So, I made a call to Lowe's this afternoon and they are SOO generously donating supplies to our two classrooms to grow our own vegetable gardens!! I am beyond excited for this, and blown away by the generosity from our new friends at Lowe's!
Today, Ms. Robertson and I will be going to Lowe's to pick up the supplies. I cannot wait to see what it is that we will be growing. What a learning opportunity!
What's even more exciting is that I am able to integrate this across all of our subjects. I have already begun pulling big books, read alouds, and poems/songs for our reading that are all about vegetables, gardens, and plants. When we get back from spring break, we will also be starting our unit on measurement in math which can be integrated into our vegetable garden in so many ways!
In this unit, I not only want to integrate math and science, but also literature! Being an ERT (Extra Reading Time) school there is such a strong focus on reading that sometimes our other subjects get lost. By integrating what we are learning into our reading, I can increase fluency and comprehension while also deepening my students content knowledge and understanding in science. I love this thematic planning! It really brings everything together so smoothly and makes learning fun and meaningful!
This is still a work in progress since the planning has just started getting in the works... but I am so excited to see where it all goes and how much my students learn from it!!!
